Chancellor meets greets

Students hoping to share ideas complaints or just friendly conversation with Chancellor Holden Thorp had the chance to chat over cookies and cocoa Monday afternoon. About 100 students dropped by the open house thrown by the student advisory committee to the chancellor in the Alpine Bagel Lounge of the Student Union ­— a departure from the more formal question-answer formats of the two previous open houses.

Postdoctoral researchers rewarded for their work

About 75 UNC students faculty and community members gathered at the Carolina Inn on Wednesday afternoon to reward a few of Carolina's best minds for their hard work. The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs held its second awards ceremony to honor 10 researchers whose fields of study ranged from health disparities among different communities to X-ray imaging.

Tunnel spreads political oppression awareness

In the middle of a campus swarmed with political propaganda one organization brought together PVC pipes" plastic sheets and politically savvy speakers to increase awareness of what they considered the unjust underbelly of the electoral system. They combined to form the ""Tunnel of Political Oppression"" which the Cobb Community brought to the Pit on Wednesday.

Dining offers cage-free eggs

For UNC students breakfast egg options are no longer just between scrambled or fried. This fall Carolina Dining Services began offering students the option of cage-free eggs in their omelets. Cage-free eggs are considered a more ethical option by many animal rights activists because they come from hens that do not spend their entire lives in battery cages.

Committee approves new student fees

The student fee advisory subcommittee approved $17.30 in fee increases for all students and gave the go-ahead for two new fees for nursing students. It also declared that one fee increase needs approval by a student referendum at its Wednesday meeting.

GAC Greeks average only 8

Families come in all shapes and sizes and this axiom is no different for members of Greek organizations. Of the 12 fraternities and sororities that make up the Greek Alliance Council the average number of members per organization is eight.

Sophomores apply to Honors

Sophomores interested in joining the Honors Program have until Friday to fill out applications. They'll have a much better shot at acceptance than they did as incoming first-year students. Forty percent of students who apply during their sophomore year have been accepted during the past four years said Jason Clemmons University administrative manager for the Honors Program.

Black groups grow with time

Since African Americans were first admitted as UNC undergraduates in 1955 numerous black professional social and service-related student groups have formed at UNC. These groups such as historically black fraternities and sororities developed as part of the University by providing a sense of community for its members said Archie Ervin associate provost for diversity and multicultural affairs.

3 vie to be education dean

Out of 36 candidates three men remain in competition for the next dean of the UNC School of Education - Leonard Abbeduto Bill McDiarmid and Jonathan Plucker. The dean search committee hopes to make a recommendation to Provost Bernadette Gray-Little this week but so far there is no preferred candidate said Jean Folkerts dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the committee's chairwoman.
