UNC junior Devon Triplett founded the non-profit Bridging the Gap during the pandemic in 2021. The organization is dedicated to increasing BIPOC representation in the business community and providing students with economic opportunities.
This fall, UNC will begin the transition from using Sakai for course websites to using Canvas — the learning management system with the largest market share in North America — in its place. Instructors will have the option to use either Sakai or Canvas this upcoming semester, meaning that students may be using both learning systems for their courses.
The student-run program, created through the executive branch of the Undergraduate Student Government, is partnering with UNC's Counseling and Psychological Services and Lyft to offer students free transportation to off-campus counseling.
“I would tell first-generation college students — first years specifically — that college might seem really, really difficult," senior Melanie Godinez-Cedillo said. “But if you lean on each other and stay rooted to who you are as a person, you will be able to succeed in whatever you pursue.”
Carolina Together Testing Program Director and Lead Physician Dr. Amir Barzin said the community should acknowledge that University COVID-19 mitigation strategies have changed as a result of the omicron variant. “Isolation and space are much more difficult because of the transmission," he said.
The organization was founded in 2016 by Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and Hussman School of Journalism and Media alumna Nikole Hannah-Jones, Associated Press International Investigations Editor Ron Nixon and ProPublica Race, Inequality and Justice System Reporter Topher Sanders.
Starting Sept. 12, UNC Campus Health will no longer be operating on Sundays, the University announced in a campus email Thursday.
In the fall, UNC students who are vaccinated will not be required to participate in asymptotic testing. Dr. Amir Barzin, the medical director of the Family Medicine Center & UNC Urgent Care at the Family Medicine Center, said UNC made the decision based on CDC recommendations and based on data from the spring.
Student Health Action Coalition, also known as SHAC, is the first student-run free clinic in the nation and is devoted to providing the UNC community with accessible and high-quality health care. SHAC is an interdisciplinary team made up of medical students, pharmacy students, nursing students and public health undergraduates. The team works together to serve patients in the general Chapel Hill-Carrboro area.
