Slate panel explains unique market niche

Obsession was the word of the night for a panel of editors from the online magazine Slate on Wednesday evening who discussed the Internet and culture. Tim Wu, a writer for Slate and a law professor at Columbia University, said the Internet enabled him to revisit his childhood preoccupation with X-Men comic books. "You can sort of drive yourself into a specific niche," said Bryan Curtis, Slate's deputy culture editor and writer of the magazine's "Middlebrow" column.

Students, Staff spend spring break aiding gulf coast communities

One week. The amount of time that several groups within the UNC community spent reaching out to the victims of Hurricane Katrina during Spring Break. "One week was just enough time to glimpse the tragedy and be stunned by aftermath," said Rachell Black, a graduate nursing student who travelled to Mississippi, to the six groups who gathered Wednesday night to reflect on and share their experiences.

Founder shares abortion rights struggle

It began with a promise off-handedly made in 1972 to a "crazy gynecologist" to work in a nonexistent legal abortion clinic. When the Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion the following year, Susan Hill, president of the National Women's Health Organization, kept her promise and became director of the first abortion clinic in Florida - the only one from Miami to Washington, D.C., she said. "It was as if women fell into the clinic," Hill said to an audience of about 40 students in Manning Hall on Wednesday evening.

Sales anything but textbook

Students loitered near the apparel section of Student Stores on Wednesday, leaning against counters or sometimes sitting on the ground, waiting for an employee to announce the arrival of their requested textbooks. The second floor of Student Stores has been closed for renovations since Monday, causing difficulties for students who have yet to buy class reading materials.

Student Health in midst of shift

The impact of a merger combining formerly separate departments of Student Health Service under one administrative umbrella remains to be seen. Effective the beginning of this year, Counseling and Psychological Service, Student Health Service and the Center for Healthy Student Behaviors began reporting to a universal assistant vice chancellor for Campus Health Service. The merger is aimed at increasing efficiency among campus health programs and better coordinating coverage to avoid overlap.

Housing policy ignites petition

Faced with a student petition protesting changes to the housing recontracting process, housing officials say they will stand by the new policy. Beginning this semester, students will see a revised process that, among other aspects, will provide rising sophomores with first grabs at available rooms on campus. But about 150 students are petitioning housing leaders to maintain the tradition of seniority during recontracting.
