Group plays homeless for a day

You can't judge a man without walking in his shoes - or in some cases, sleeping in them. That was the goal of 40 students who participated in the annual Sleepout for the Homeless co-sponsored by UNC's chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity Inc. and, for the first year, the Advocates for Human Rights committee of the Campus Y. Sleeping outside in tents on the Hinton James Residence Hall basketball court, students aimed to raise awareness and funds to alleviate homelessness in the Chapel Hill area. Donations went to the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service in Carrboro.

Immigration rally hits UNC

As community members marched from South Building to the Pit on Friday morning, about 20 voices resounded chanting, "immigration built this nation." The small group, composed of students, faculty and University employees, journeyed across campus with signs and pins to help build awareness about an issue with large implications: immigration. The Carolina Hispanic Association organized the peaceful rally in response to a U.S. House of Representatives bill that would make assisting undocumented immigrants a felony rather than a civil infraction.

This week GLBTSA is embracing the relationship between the University community and their Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender peers during the group's second-annual Ally Week.

Marathon of dancing nears start

When most people hear the phrase, "I get it from my momma," their minds likely would jump to the lyrics of a rap song. But in the case of the UNC Dance Marathon, it's the name of one of the myriad packs of dancers donating their time and goodwill to help children in need. On Feb. 24, students in "I get it from my momma" will dance the hours away for an entire day with more than 850 dancers in groups such as "Piccolo Lovers" and "The Rubber Duckies."
