Commissioners Prepare for State's Legislative Session

With any luck, Orange County Commissioners' legislative goals for 2001 will pass through the General Assembly as easily as they did at a public hearing Tuesday night.In a meeting at the Southern Human Services Center, the commissioners unanimously approved the county's goals 4-0. Commissioner Margaret Brown is in Mexico and did not attend. County attorney Geoff Gledhill presented the county's goals in front of about 30 residents.

Forum Addresses Local Mass Transit

Local transit authorities held a sparsely attended public forum Tuesday at Chapel Hill Town Hall to discuss the state of mass transit in the area. Seven area residents voiced their opinions about public transportation to representatives from the Chapel Hill Transportation Board, the Triangle Transit Authority and the Chapel Hill Transit Authority. Chapel Hill Transportation Planner David Bonk began the forum by assessing the popularity of Chapel Hill's transit system.

TaxWatch Questions New Pool

A local watchdog group has raised concerns about a proposed aquatic center in Chapel Hill and is directing them to Mayor Rosemary Waldorf.In a letter he sent to the mayor Tuesday, John Ryan, a member of TaxWatch, questioned the need for new pools. Instead, he suggested using Chapel Hill buses to shuttle people to Triangle Sportsplex in Hillsborough."We want to put those buses to work," Ryan said later.

Body in Fire Named as UNC Worker

Officials have identified the body of a man found in the rubble of Tuesday night's fire at the Brookstone Apartments complex. The victim, Roger Vanden Dorpel, 51, was employed by UNC Hospitals in the diagnostic radiology department as an X-ray technician. He lived at 1116 Brookstone Apartments. "His co-workers liked him very much, and they are devastated," said Lynn Wooten, spokesman for UNC Hospitals.
