Improv finds a home on the Hill

Improvisation needs audience energy to survive, and if Friday night was any sign for the future, UNC will host several more years of improvisational comedy. The 5th Annual Dirty South Improv Festival ran Tuesday through Sunday in both Chapel Hill and Raleigh. The nine-show festival featured more than 300 participants. The electric mood at 8 p.m. in a packed Hamilton Auditorium generated great anticipation for the show.

Group's show boasts variety

Pauper Players tossed a little variety into this year’s production of “Broadway Melodies” — but UNC’s student-run musical theater group kept the youthful exuberance that is its trademark. Gerrard Hall hosted the annual musical revue, which showcases a variety of Broadway tunes within sets. Each song in a set loosely ties together a story created by the performers. The final “Broadway Melodies” showing is 8 p.m. today. This year’s show featured four sets, running a lengthy 150 minutes.

The Black Student Movement on Friday presented “I, Too, Sing America,” a production intended to raise awareness of minorities’ struggles for equality.

Rock documentary multifaceted

Seven years and 1,500 hours of footage is simply too much film for documentary editors to handle. However, the overwhelming amount of footage forces director Ondi Timoner to focus on a single angle or risk being buried in the material. Because of that, "DiG!" reeks of pure bias for 115 minutes.

Ebullient Ditty Bops try hand at twee pop tunes

In the jaded and cynical world in which you've wrapped yourself, The Ditty Bops want to be your ray of hope. The Ditty Bops' saccharine-sweet self-titled debut album isn't for those who like their music without some sugar. Those people will die from an overdose, because the band's music is the equivalent of a syrupy syringe to the heart. But for those of you willing to open up and let a little sunshine in, you could find yourself warming up quickly to the upbeat female duo.

Green Day sharpens political consciousness

Green Day has experienced growth eerily mirroring puberty. Dookie and Insomniac's lively, yet juvenile, ranting was reminiscent of foul-mouthed youth, while the angst-ridden Nimrod embraced anger and 16-year-old existentialism. The experimentation of 2000's Warning hints at college-level pseudo-intellectualism, a faux maturity that went nowhere.
