Our University is often regarded as one of the most progressive campuses in the nation. Chapel Hill and the surrounding community is widely considered to be one of the most liberal areas in the southern U.S.
When coming up with state budget last year, the N.C. legislature passed a version that would eliminate tenure for teachers in the state by 2018. In “exchange” for having to give up tenure status, school districts will give the top 25 percent of teachers a raise of $500 per year.
On Sunday evening, the 86th Annual Academy Awards aired. “12 Years A Slave,” was a major winner, collecting three awards including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress. Lupita Nyong’o, a Mexican-born actress of Kenyan descent, won the latter award for her portrayal of Patsey in what was her debut major film role.
The state is Florida. The setting is a murder trial. The two people at the center of the case include an older white man and a younger black teenager. One is alive, while the other is dead. The defendant claims he fired his weapon in self-defense.
In honor of Black History Month, I’d like to take a look at some accomplishments by African-Americans that are often overlooked. It seems as if every February we discuss the same landmark moments, such as the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery.
On Monday evening, I attended the 34th Annual UNC Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture, where famous actor and best-selling author Hill Harper was this year’s keynote speaker. A particular expression that Harper told the audience of about 1,000 attendants stood out to me. He said we now view King in a “revisionist” way.
At a time when minority males rank below their counterparts in relation to graduation rates, it is also necessary to look at the lack of black faculty in higher education.
While the latter part of the 20th century saw both Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month rise to the forefront of American culture, very few people are aware of American Indian Heritage Month.
Halloween, Homecoming and the last day of classes are arguably the three biggest celebrations for college students. Unlike the latter two, Halloween offers the one chance of the year to not only act but also dress outside of your normal persona.
