New NCSA chancellor welcomed warmly

May 18 - The North Carolina School of the Arts recently appointed John Mauceri, founding director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and music director for the Pittsburgh Opera, as its new chancellor. And though Mauceri has no experience in academic administration, reviews of his appointment have been glowing. "We're just so thrilled that we picked him and that he picked us," said Anne White, NCSA's vice chancellor for student life. "There is no doubt that he will contribute a great deal, and his presence will have a positive impact on enrollment as well as the entire student body."

UNC system OKs assembly for staff

UNC-system employees will be able to have their concerns heard more easily now that a proposal to create a systemwide assembly of workers has been approved by system President Erskine Bowles. The group will join the UNC-system Association of Student Governments, as well as the system's Faculty Assembly, as a statewide organization. And though chancellors at some system schools were reluctant to support the soon-to-be-created assembly - worried that its existence would undermine their management - many are expressing a positive attitude toward its impending formation.

UNC alumnus faces spotlight

The College Board has come into the spotlight repeatedly in the last several months - not surprising for the nonprofit group, responsible for the SAT, that's seen its power over college admissions grow in the last few years. And in the middle of the maelstrom is Gaston Caperton, president of the College Board, and a 1963 UNC alumnus. Born in Charleston, W.Va., Caperton was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon during his time at Carolina.

NCCU, NASA no longer tied

Over the last several years, N.C. Central University has helped to encourage the next generation of scientists as a NASA Center for Excellence. "The program has definitely been a success," said Ken Harewood, director of the Biomedical-Biotechnology Research Institute at NCCU. "We've had lots of students come through the program ranging from high school up to graduate school." But it will soon be no more, as 2006 was its last year of funding.

Hike in tuition a real threat

Despite generous budget proposals passing in both the N.C. House and Senate, rising tuition rates are a distinct possibility at universities across the state. Though both proposals provide the UNC system with full-enrollment growth funding of about $79 million and need-based financial aid of about $21.5 million, the overall percentage money per student has decreased. The state money for the UNC system - nearly $2.25 billion in all - only provides for some of the dollars needed to maintain a high quality of education, officials say.

RIAA still has eye on U.S. campuses

Network piracy might become more difficult with a recent volley against illegal file-swapping from the entertainment industry. The Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America announced a campaign to restrict illegal file sharing through peer-to-peer networks on college campuses. Last month, the associations sent letters to 40 universities in 25 states warning administrators of LAN piracy at their schools and offering to work with schools to crack down on network abusers. Neither association included the UNC system on the mailing list.
